Lake Lambert is Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. Prior to his appointment at Mercer in 2010, he was Professor of Religion and the Board of Regents Chair in Ethics at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.

Types, Methods, and Sagas in Lutheran Higher Education: Learning from Childers

Lambert situates Eric Childers’ College Identity Sagas within the older tradition of the 1977 Association of Lutheran College Faculties volume The Church-Related College in an Age of Pluralism, working through Burton Clark’s “saga” and Robert Benne’s typology of church-related colleges. He commends Childers’ socio-scientific approach while questioning whether a typology can do justice to institutions that resist easy classification.

In a sermon preached in the Castle Church in Wittenberg during Wartburg College’s 2006 faculty and staff development seminar, Lambert names two sins of the mind—coveting and mental sloth (in both its rigid refusal to think and its mindless relativism)—and, drawing on Luther’s Large Catechism and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “A Tough Mind and a Tender Heart,” calls Christians to receive the wisdom that comes when faith puts knowledge into action, sustained by the hope of the resurrection.

The Divide Within (Not Between) Liberal Arts and Professional Education

Lambert, then Board of Regents Chair in Ethics at Wartburg College and Project Director for the “Discovering and Claiming our Callings Initiative,” argues that the real divide in higher education runs not between the liberal arts and the professions but within each — between teaching that forms students for callings and teaching that merely transmits content or credential. He calls Lutheran colleges to recover, across both liberal arts and professional disciplines, a shared commitment to vocational formation grounded in the Lutheran tradition.
